HERE are 23 acres in a little-known valley in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Northern New Mexico. The sunset is so red it drapes the peaks and valleys in light as if the blood of Christ. Conjure Georgia O’Keefe colors with a northern twang, and then think peace as your tires crunch the gravel.
The valley’s winds blow crisp down from the cave (la cueva) said to be high on Julian’s ridge. But down here on el portal (the porch), shelter yourself under hand-hewed viga timbers, wrapped in a woven blanket and find that our hospitality is as broad as our porches. And these are truly grand portales...sun-soaked shade-deepened spaces where wine tastes better.
These country accommodations are a feast for the senses that flow together from the seasonal melodies drifting across the
valley from the creek to the slant of the shadows in the late afternoon sun. Someone delivered your groceries from the finest local merchants and you have a clean, cared-for place to lite when you bring it all to the kitchen at Los Portales hacienda. This is expansive outdoor entertaining and enjoying just for yourselves or for your closest friends and family while the horses crunch their hay just beyond the circle of light. |
